The Linguistic Society of Southern Africa is a scholarly society of linguists whose research foci are the languages of the Southern African region. As such, "Southern" here refers more to linguistic borders than geographic ones.
The numerous languages within the Society's purview are:
Afrikaans, Bemba, ChiShona, Chichewa, Ciluba, Damara, English, French, German, isiNdebele, isiXhosa, isiZulu, Nama, Nyanja, Portuguese, San, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Sindebele,Siswati, Tshivenda, Xitsonga.
Recorded history barely hints at the establishment of the Society, but oral history would suggest that the Linguistic Society of Southern Africa was established in the 1960's when a group of linguists initially congregated to foster research, and more especially the sharing of knowledge, of those with common, frequently overlapping, fields of interest.
Since then, the Society has come into its own, inter alia: holding a vibrant annual conference attended by regional and international linguists; publishing an accredited journal, and supplements to the journal; awarding a 'Young Linguist' award; fostering the development of young linguists in awarding conference grants to student presenters; establishing an electronic discussion forum; and, last but not least, taking its journal online.
The Southern African Linguistics and Applied Language Studies journal was first published as Volume 18 in November 2000. It combines two accredited journals which have their own independent histories: the South African Journal of Linguistics (the journal of the Linguistic Society of Southern Africa - LSSA) and the Southern African Journal of Applied Language Studies (the journal of the Southern African Applied Linguistics Association - SAALA). The journal in its new guise is published by the National Inquiry Services Centre (NISC), a well-known provider of bibliographic databases. Through this new association it is anticipated that the journal will benefit from NISC's international profile and marketing initiatives.
